Workshop on Cyber Range Applications and Technologies (CACOE’19)

The first Workshop on Cyber Range Applications and Technologies (CACOE) 2019 was successfully held in conjunction with the 4th IEEE European Symposium on  Security and Privacy (EuroS&P) in Stockholm, Sweden. The keynote was presented by David Olgart of the Swedish Armed Forces on Cyber Ranges from a Military Perspective. In addition, five scientific contributions were presented during the workshop:

  • Realistic Cybersecurity Training via Scenario Progression Management by Razvan Beuran, Takuya Inoue, Yasuo Tan and Yoichi Shinoda (Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology)
  • Becoming Invisible Hands of National Live-fire Attack-Defense Cyber Exercise by Joonsoo Kim, Youngjae Maeng and Moonsu Jang (National Security Research Institute)
  • Designing Serious Games for Cyber Ranges: A Socio-technical Approach by Mazaher Kianpour, Stewart Kowalski, Erjon Zoto, Christopher Frantz and Harald Øverby (Norwegian University of Science and Technology)
  • Cybersecurity Experimentation at Program Scale: Guidelines and Principles for Future Testbeds by Erik Kline and Steve Schwab (University of Southern California)
  • Pedagogical Aspects of Cyber Security Exercises by Samir Puuska, Tero Kokkonen and Mika Karjalainen (JAMK University of Applied Sciences)

The workshop was concluded with a round table discussion on research questions and challenges in cyber ranges such as reusability, standardization, evaluation of exercises and training and collaboration opportunities. With the motivating feedback from the participants, the program chairs will host CACOE workshop again in 2020.
